This course examines Russia’s multi-ethnic and multi-confessional empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. In class, we shall consider how shifting relations between the Russian “center” and the Eastern European and Eurasian “periphery” shape local identities. How and when did nationalist sentiment emerge in these regions? How did shifting borders affect identity formation? And finally how did imperial or Soviet “patriotism” co-exist or conflict with local identities? Enrollment Limit: 12 Instructor: C. Stolarski Consent of the Instructor Required: Yes
