How do we know the habitats in which early hominins lived? In this class, we will learn about the methodologies used to reconstruct ancient habitats and apply these methods to the evidence gathered from Laetoli, an early hominin site in Tanzania, over the last 15 years. We will also examine other early hominin sites and their paleoecological reconstructions to articulate hypotheses on the interactions between early hominins and their environments and how habitat changes might have impacted the evolution of our lineage. Class sessions will take place at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. These weekly class sessions are required “field” trips.
