This course provides frameworks for both describing and analyzing some of the religious arts developed and inspired by Africans and their descendants in the Atlantic world. Our focus will be on articulating how lived religious practices associated with terms like Santeria, Voodoo, and Candomble embody the contradictions and complexities of culture, race, sexuality, nationhood, and community in Africa and the Americas. Specific case studies will include communal altars, religious goods stores, popular media, and sacred rituals. Field trip required.
