How did political thought develop from the 18th to the mid-20th century? Does it still matter today? We will pay particular attention to critiques of Enlightenment that emerge in this period; to questions about the meaning of politics and its relationship to history; and to questions of freedom, political economy, bureaucracy and totalitarianism, among others. Authors may include: Rousseau, Burke, J. S. Mill, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, and Arendt. Prequisites and notes: POLT 231 recommended but not required. Enrollment Limit: 25 Instructor: J. Schiff
