HIST 207 - Byzantium: The Crossroads of Civilizations Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4SS
For almost one thousand years after the “fall” of Rome, the legacy of that civilization continued in the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire. The decisions of its rulers shaped the histories of the early Islamic caliphates, Varangian Russia, and Medieval Europe, even as its own political and social life derived from the Roman traditions it inherited. Yet many today know little or nothing about this once great empire and its cross-cultural influence. This course immerses the student in the fascinating world of the Eastern Mediterranean from the fourth to the fifteenth century. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: J. Reidy
