Early Modern Spain ruled an empire that stretched from Italy to Latin America, by way of the Low Countries. This class will examine the various artistic cultures encompassed within this empire, with a particular focus on how works of art took on value and authority across different cultural settings such as Madrid and Mexico City. Case studies will include feather mosaics, polychrome sculpture, iconoclasm, and works by artists both within and outside of Iberia (for instance Velázquez and Albert Eckhout). Field trips required.
