ARTS 405 - Time Out of Joint: Art and Technology in Ages of Anachronism Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Courses Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4 HU
From the Greek ana- (backward) and khronos (time), anachronism implies temporal regression, a presence incongruous with the present. Rapid technological development makes anachronism a quotidian threat, highlighting Wendy Chun’s analysis of the need to perpetually update in order to remain the same. This course charts the trajectory of anachronism, considering the multiplicity of time(s) in various artistic mediums. Navigating anachronism through its familial offshoots (nostalgia, obsolescence, heterochrony), our turn backward reveals an emerging historicity of the present, made visible through artistic experimentation. Artists include Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, David Cronenberg, Hollis Frampton, Luther Price, Michael Robinson, Cindy Sherman, Kehinde Wiley, etc.. Enrollment Limit: 15 Instructor: J. Hansen Prerequisites & Notes 300-Level course in Art History
