FYSP 087 - Speak, Memories: Life, Art, and Literary Self-Representation Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU, WINT
Why do people write their own stories? And why are we so interested in reading them? In this class we will consider memoirs, graphic memoirs, confessions, slave narratives, essays, and other genres in which people turn their lives into art (or claim to). We will ask how such representations shape our ideas about memory, experience, and the self. We will discuss issues of curiosity, empathy, voyeurism, and ethics. Readings may include works by Bechdel, Kingston, Douglass, and Nabokov. Enrollment Limit: 15 Instructor: J. Bryan Consent of the Instructor Required: Yes
