This course explores Hollywood as city, site of American filmmaking, and aesthetic/theoretical space over the last 100 years. A broad variety of movies, television shows, novels, and critical pieces will explore three different eras: the studio system (1927-1948), the era of American cinephilia (1945-1975) and post-classical Hollywood (1975-present). In doing so, we will think about the broader historical, aesthetic and cultural meanings of Hollywood, from its peak to today.
