FYSP 145 - The Literature of Decadence, the Art of Sensation Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU, WINT
A radically new style of writing characterized Western European literatures in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rejecting associations of the beautiful and good in favor of works that explored decline and day (of the West and its civilizations), a literature of decadence flourished as it also gave rise to a wave of avant-garde movements across Europe. We will examine the works of Russia’s decadent writers and the Western European authors who influenced them, focusing on the movement?s debts to nineteenth-century Russian literature, critical outrage to the movement across Europe, and its influence on other art forms. Enrollment Limit: 15 Instructor: T. Scholl Consent of the Instructor Required: Yes
