Public political discourse has recently given increasing prominence to the notions of truth, facts, knowledge, and evidence, along with claims about what scientists do and don’t know, and why. We will think through some of the assumptions and competing views implicit in such discourse. Readings will be drawn from primarily from the work of philosophers, along with pieces by political historians, scientists, sociologists and historians of science, and others.
