Rock music, along with its related styles, has had a significant musical influence on many types of musical practice over the past several decades.  What type of listening and analytical skills can we bring to it?  How might these skills help us listen more deeply to music from other genres?  In this class we will learn how to closely listen to and analyze rock and recent popular songs, focusing on the period from the 1960s to the mid 1990s.  When listening, we will learn to attend to:

-phrase rhythm and hypermeter
-rock’s multiple systems of tonality and voice leading
