CLAS 240 - Identity and Citizenship in Ancient Democracy Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4 SS, CD
What does it mean to be a citizen? This course will investigate how the ancient Athenians constructed their identities through their unique democratic political system and within a society that blurred the division between public and private selves. Our inquiry will focus on ancient Greek sources in translation supplemented with modern scholars and will venture beyond legal status into the ideological underpinnings of the democratic citizen. Readings will include philosophy, historiography, poetry, and oratory. Class time will be mostly dedicated to discussion.
