ARTS 412 - Curating Diasporas: Approaches to Museum Studies and Public Pedagogy

How do we curate and teach “diaspora”? What does it mean to tell the story of nations, migration, and international engagement through objects? This course examines museum studies and pedagogy through readings, museum case studies, and visits to museums including the Allen Art Museum and the Cleveland Art Museum. Students will examine how diaspora, particularly the African Diaspora, have or can be curated in public institutions to expand diaspora theory by focusing on objects and public pedagogy. Students will be required to complete a final paper or case study on museum practice(s) as it relates to the course topic.
