ENGL 223 - Meaning and Being: Nature in 19th-Century American Narrative

A survey of prominent literary works of the 1800s, emphasizing close reading and giving special attention to the concept of “Nature.” The reading list will be centered around Moby-Dick, which appeared in the middle of the century and features tangled relations between meaning and being, self and other.
