This course is an introduction to the Afro-Brazilian dance Samba no pé (samba in the feet) in the “Carioca” or Rio de Janeiro style. Deeply enmeshed with Brazil’s colonial history, samba arose as a form of resistance and radical joy while simultaneously being co-opted as a symbol of national identity. With dance as our focus, this course will offer an embodied exploration of samba through the practice of physical technique and improvisation alongside analysis of the aesthetics and ideology. We will also study the music, history, traditions, and socio-cultural context surrounding the dance through reading, writing, videos, and discussions.

This course is appropriate for new students.
