MUTH 266PT - East Asia in Western Art MusicFC CNDP CD PT 4 credits This course explores art music that lies at the interface of East Asian, European, and North American traditions. We will examine works by European and American composers who were influenced by East Asian musical systems, timbres, and aesthetic principles, as well as works by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean composers whose training was grounded in Western art music. The primary focus will be on instrumental and vocal music written after 1900. In addition to engaging in theoretical analysis and close readings, we will also discuss the processes and politics of musical transculturation in the context of the selected repertoire. (This course will fill the Post Tonal (PT) attribute requirement.)
Prerequisites: MUTH 132 Music Theory II.
