ARTS 335 - Saints and Relics in Medieval and Renaissance Art

Second Semester. This course studies the role art played in the Christian cult of the saints during the Middle Ages. We begin in the fourth century, when Christianity first assumes a broad public face, and finish around 1550, in the wake of the Protestant Reformation. We will study both thematic issues—the importance of relics, the promotion of pilgrimage, etc.—and the iconography of specific saints—among them Thomas Becket, Francis of Assisi, and King Louis IX. We will seek to understand the impact of the cult of the saints on medieval art, and the impact of medieval art on the cult of the saints.
