HIST 371 - The Russian Intelligentsia in the Late Imperial Period


3 SS
First Semester. This course examines the social and cultural construction of the Russian intelligentsia, its self-identity, and its intellectual products. We will read some of the great works of social, political and literary commentary on such topics as the Slavophile-Westernizer debates, nihilism and populism, Social Democracy and the “worker question”, liberalism, the crisis of values at the turn of the century. Readings will include works by Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Lenin.
