ARTS 413 - Archeological Field Course 4 SS
A four week summer course in field archaeology offered in conjunction with the Sangro Valley Project, a joint archaeological project of Oberlin College and Oxford University (www.sangro.org) at the Samnite/Roman site of Monte Pallano in the Abruzzo, Italy. Participants will learn theoretical and practical aspects of excavation. There will also be field trips, lectures on the history of the region, and discussions of the current problems facing professionals in the field of heritage resource management. ARTS 423 - Advanced Archeological Field Course 5 SS A four week summer course for students with previous fieldwork experience who wish to further their training in archaeological field methods and research. ARTS 450 - Modern Seminar: Manet and the Modernist Project: Paris 1860-1880 3 HU New Course added 04/23/2006 for first semester (moved from second semester)
First Semester. Issues central to Modernism from consumerism to gender roles, class distinctions, racial hierarchies, and bourgeois politics were in flux in mid-century Paris. Although in existence in a modern form from the beginning of the century, these and other concerns that define modernity were transformed dramatically during the period under study. Avant-garde artists represented these changes from a variety of perspectives. We will focus on Manet in particular, as well as Degas, Cassatt and the Impressionists, in order to the study the Modernist Project in their work.

ARTS 458 - Seminar in the History of Modern Architecture:The Chair 3 HU
Second Semester. As the poet Theodore Roethke once wrote, “A funny thing about the Chair: You hardly ever think it’s there.” This seminar will investigate the history and theory of an ubiquitous but little understood object that is at once a symbol of power, a means of regulating labor and social relations, an industrial commodity, an architecture, an art object/subject, and—perhaps—even a thing one sits on. We will discuss—and, when possible, examine first-hand—chairs and sitting practices of all types, from the ancient folding stool to contemporary contract furniture, and digest the startling diversity of theoretical approaches to understanding chairs and sitting.

First and Second Semester. Course will initiate practice and appreciation of graphic expression, with an emphasis on developing a conceptual understanding of traditional and contemporary pictorial concerns beginning with traditional observation drawing to sharpen perceptual awareness. Diagrammatic line and principles of perspective will be presented as spatial and compositional concepts. First Semester. This is a studio course where students are introduced to painting in acrylics or oils from the landscape. The aim of the course is to infuse the practice of perceptual painting with an understanding of cultural and artistic conventions within which the practice exists. To establish this context the time spent painting in the studio will be supplemented by several trips to the Allen Art Museum, and some reading. The class will be focused on the practice of painting and drawing learning both how the art we make influences what we see and how what we see influences the art we make.

ARTS 049 - Visual Concepts and Processes: Sculpture 3 HU
First and Second Semester. Referencing your own body as it traverses daily through time and space, students will explore the basics of three-dimensional space. Using paper, cardboard, plaster, wood and found objects in addition to form, texture, sound, scale, and proportion, students will complete three major projects. Weekly homework assignments will expand upon classroom projects. Although craft and technique are important, they are not a driving force. Required forms of participation also include critiques, weekly discussions, and reading assignments. A sketchbook will be required. Students should expect to spend 12 hours per week outside of class to meet the minimum requirements.

First Semester. This course is a ‘hands on’ exploration of vernacular visual traditions existing within African American Culture. We will examine design choices/material processes used to define and describe the specificity of lived experience within African American culture. Our focus is upon elders within black communities and the stories that they tell through their work. These ‘folk artists’ function as influences upon contemporary African American artists ranging from Alison Saar, to Renee’ Stout. These vernacular traditions will serve as resources that extend our own working processes as we tell our own stories.

First and Second Semester. This course is intent on developing skills and methodologies introduced in Drawing 040. Assignments will engage postmodern strategies relevant to graphic representation. Other projects will research symbolism in painting and the sequential development of abstraction as an expressive method and metaphoric iconography.

ARTS 095 - Senior Studio and Thesis 6 HU
First and Second Semester. A year-long team-taught studio course for highly self-motivated students. Taught by two different faculty each semester. Participants will work toward a critical articulation of their work and process, through the development of a visual thesis that may include painting, digital media, installation, sculpture, photography, performance or silkscreen or any combination thereof. Students will produce a thesis exhibition, artist’s statement, and a professional portfolio by the end of the second semester. It is strongly suggested that students complete all winter terms prior to their senior year, since students will be required to continue working toward their final exhibition during this time.

Second Semester. Second Module. This course examines where and why impacts take place and what happens when they do. Enormous amounts of energy are released when meteorites, asteroids, comets, and planets collide at “cosmic velocities.” Serious collisions create impact craters, which occur in abundance throughout the solar system. Topics will include: Did an asteroid kill all the dinosaurs? Do meteorites from Mars contain evidence of extraterrestrial life? Could a large impact end human civilization? ASTR 302 - Astrophysics II: Galaxies and Cosmology 3 NS
Second Semester. This course will explore basic astrophysical topics beyond the local stellar neighborhood. We will consider the “ecology” of the Milky Way galaxy and use it to understand galaxies in isolation and in clusters. Cosmological topics will include the dynamics of an expanding universe including an acceleration term. Results from anisotropy studies of the cosmic background radiation will be studied in some detail. Evidence for dark matter and dark energy will be thoroughly reviewed.
