  • ARTS 077 - Problems: Talking Book Workshop

    This workshop is a hands on exploration of spoken/written narrative within African American visual tradition(s). We will view works by Carrie Mae Weems, Amina Robinson, David Hammons, Whitfield Lovell, and others alongside of texts, listening assignments, and poetry to explore the presence of the spoken word within African American expressivity. Students will be required to write, perform, and compose sonic landscapes that explore their own sense of self and place. Weekly reflections will be assigned in addition to one major project as a culmination of each student’s research.

  • ARTS 079 - Problems: With the Grain Workshop

    This course seeks to provide students with an intensive workshop module in which to develop facility with specific woodworking skills. The course immerses participants in sequential processes of articulating ideas through drawing, structural problem solving, and the construction of models. Hand-cut joint exercises will be assigned throughout the workshop, with joinery learned applied in the construction of the models. Two structures will be explored: a bench, and a table. Each project will be presented in the context of function, style, and material culture.

  • ARTS 080 - Visual Concepts and Process - Sound Art: Experimental Musical Instruments and Sound Sculpture

    This course explores Sound Art as it occurs with non-acousmatic sound (i.e. experimental musical instruments/sound objects and sound sculptures in which the sounding element is typically also visually associated). Techniques in instrument/sculpture building and sound reproduction/amplification will be explored in both contemporary and historical approaches. Artists discussed will be both contemporary and historical figures within the sound art practice. Furthermore, students will explore the affective relationship to sounding objects and the physical limitations of gesture to sound producing objects.

  • ARTS 086 - VisPro Media Archaeology: Obsolescence in New Media Art Practice

    All obsolete media was once new media. Media Archaeology will dig through technological history to gain a better understanding of how obsolescence impacts the practice, exhibition, and preservation of new media art. This class will include extensive readings from a variety of fields that investigate technology and obsolescence; the class will also view artworks that investigate dead tech and upgrade culture. This is a seminar/studio hybrid class, so students should be prepared to view artwork and read extensively on a weekly basis alongside short studio assignments. Studio assignments will employ expanded drawing/visualization, hacking, and experimental use of obsolete technologies.

    This course surveys the history of Video Art from its emergence in the mid 1960s to the present. Focusing primarily on its development in the United States, we will pay special attention to Video Art’s initial outgrowth from modernist artistic practice (painting, sculpture, performance, experimental film), its relationship to its “parent medium” of television, and its expansion from the domestic monitor into large scale projected image installations, complete with a full-scale embrace of cinematic properties. Students will learn to analyze video as moving image art and contend with works that confront the medium’s social, political, and ethical stakes

    This course is a focused survey of art in the later 20th century. We will trace a shift that began in the 1960s, with the loss of arts self-eviden[ce], as Theodor Adorno had it in 1969, bringing changes in arts production, media, spectatorship, display, and institutions. How did artists deploy new vocabularies to address and define this shift? This course introduces the major movements of late 20th c. art, situating them in a broader context.

  • ARTS 328 - Politics and Protest: Modern Chinese Art

    An examination of artistic trends from the fall of dynastic China in 1911 to the 1990s, this course will highlight artists’ attempts to ‘modernize’ against the backdrop of Civil War, the rise of the Communist Party, and following the death of Mao. Topics will include: early art societies, academies and curriculum, woodcuts, Socialist Realist painting, propaganda posters, and such post-Mao movements as Scar art, the Stars, and ‘90s experimental art.

  • ARTS 335 - Saints and Relics in Medieval and Renaissance Art

    This course studies the role art played in the Christian cult of the saints during the Middle Ages. We begin in the fourth century, when Christianity first assumes a broad public face, and finish around 1550, in the wake of the Protestant Reformation. We will study both thematic issues-the importance of relics, the promotion of pilgrimage, etc.-and the iconography of specific saints-among them Thomas Becket, Francis of Assisi, and King Louis IX. We will seek to understand the impact of the cult of the saints on medieval art, and the impact of medieval art on the cult of the saints.

  • ARTS 340 - Gender and the Visual Arts in Europe, 1450-1750

    This course examines understandings of gender in early modern Europe through the lens of the visual arts and material culture. We will consider not only how cultural conventions of gender limited experiences, but also how marginalized voices challenged conventions. We will explore how gender affected the artistic production of women artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi and Sofonisba Anguissola. And we will consider how women commissioned and collected works of art to construct an identity. We will also discuss how attitudes towards masculinity were shaped through the visual arts and bodily adornment. Field trip required.

  • ARTS 352 - Coffeehouses and Teahouses: A Global History

    From Ottoman coffeehouses to Japanese teahouses to Parisian cafes, the collective consumption of substances like coffee, tea, and tobacco has long created distinctive material cultures, artworks, and architectural spaces. In this course, we trace the dissemination of these stimulants across the globe from the sixteenth century onward. We will examine the material context of the substances in different scales, ranging from utensils to interior spaces and broader urban landscapes. Routes of transfer will be explored along with the development of new forms of sociability, material objects, and architectural types such as coffeehouses, teahouses, and smoking rooms.

    This course examines figural painting and arts of the book in the Islamic lands, with a focus on Arabic and Persian cultural spheres ca. 1200s-1800s. The class concludes with the advent of printing and lithographic image making in the nineteenth century.

  • ARTS 360 - Black Feminist Aesthetics: Evolutions of Black Girl Magic

    This course examines the political, social, and historical motivations for the creation of art by Black Women/Womyn (broadly defined). Through the course, students will develop their own definitions of Black Feminism as we explore the works of African Diasporic women creators including: Edmonia Lewis, Ida B. Wells, Zora Neale Hurston, Lois Malou Jones, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Nora Chipaumire, Tyanna Buie, and Ebony Golden. We examine the historical evolution of Black Women/Womyn’s artistic practices from literature to contemporary art to trace the evolutions of Black feminism, Black feminist aesthetics, and contextualize comptemporary art and/or activism by Black Women/Womyn.   • ARTS 361 - Ritual Performance in the Haitian Dyaspora

    This course examines the role of ritual and performance, specifically a “Vodou aesthetic,” in shaping art making (broadly defined) within the Haitian Dyaspora (Diaspora). Through critical readings, discussions, and the making of installation/site-specific art and performance, students will study the ways that secular and non-secular ritual and performance have worked to socially, politically, and historically construct a practice of Dyaspora. In addition to articulating the importance of ritual and performance in the global Haitian community, students will be asked to reflect on their own definitions and usages of the concepts as they relate to their lives.

  • ARTS 412 - Curating Diasporas: Approaches to Museum Studies and Public Pedagogy

    How do we curate and teach “diaspora”? What does it mean to tell the story of nations, migration, and international engagement through objects? This course examines museum studies and pedagogy through readings, museum case studies, and visits to museums including the Allen Art Museum and the Cleveland Art Museum. Students will examine how diaspora, particularly the African Diaspora, have or can be curated in public institutions to expand diaspora theory by focusing on objects and public pedagogy. Students will be required to complete a final paper or case study on museum practice(s) as it relates to the course topic.

  • ARTS 434 - Cinema Artist’s Cinema

    This seminar traces the genealogy of the moving image in 20th and 21st century artistic practice. Working across art history, cinema studies, and media theory, we will explore the emergence of the moving image between the black box and white cube. We will consider debates around the recent catch-all designation “artists’ moving image,” and engage with both theoretical and socio-political concerns arising from expanded cinema performance, structural film, screen-reliant media, video installation, etc. Artists include Oskar Fischinger, Andy Warhol, Paul Sharits, Tony Conrad, Tacita Dean, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Fiona Tan, Christian Marclay, Anri Sala, and Kevin Jerome Everson.     The early modern period in Europe saw an explosion in the production of “stuff”. This seminar explores the significance of materials at this time, when, for instance, wood was compared to the human body and metals to blood. Working with materials in workshops, laboratories and marketplaces, artisans developed hands-on experience that paved the way for much of the “higher learning” of the Scientific Revolution. Cross-cultural exchange of, and appreciation for, materials will also be considered.

    This course considers the issues and stakes that underlie antiquities and their export to disparate contexts to explore the larger question: who owns the past? We will examine positions on ‘cultural property’ from the perspective of archaeologists, art historians, collectors and museums, and explore issues of nationalism and national heritage, (illicit) trade and forgery, the preservation of world monuments, and recent legal cases. Students will research case studies and argue positions in the debate.

    Buildings, objects, and texts are all cultural artifacts. When they intersect, when a building is inscribed with a poem or a literary text engages with a spatial reality, the result is a sophisticated product that combines visual and verbal modes of communication. Visual cultures of the Islamic lands abound with such examples, ranging from poetic epigraphy on buildings (as in the Alhambra) to city descriptions by local and foreign visitors. This seminar will examine select works of Islamic art and architecture in relation to literary texts that engage with their aesthetic and functional aspects.
