    TECH 170 serves as a performer-focused introduction to the interpretation of electroacoustic music.  The class will examine compositions scored for instrument(s) with CD playback, instrument(s) with live electronics, and instrument(s) with other media.  In addition to adding such pieces to repertoire, students will learn the necessary technology to bring them to life in performance.  The class covers the relevant uses of microphones, mixers, speakers, and computer software, while also attending to important theoretical and conceptual approaches to electroacoustic performance practice.  This course will be particularly relevant to those interested in preparing electroacoustic works for recital.

    TECH 201 is required of, and typically limited to TIMARA and Composition majors.  Non-majors looking for an introductory TIMARA course should consider TECH 101, TECH 170, or secondary lessons.  TECH 201 offers an introduction to the electroacoustic studio environment.  Practical work includes analog and digital audio, synthesis techniques, sequencing, and sound editing on the computer.  Regular short assignments reinforce facility with the standard tools of the composing studio.  At least two major creative projects present the opportunity to demonstrate skill proficiency.  A reading and listening survey of historical and contemporary practice provides the basis for exploring analytical and critical techniques.

    TECH 202 continues the exploration of digital technology for the creation of music.  The course focuses on the creation of interactive works, and the artistic issues and challenges that arise when working with real-time software.  We use the Max/MSP/Jitter programming environment to create these works and to further explore theoretical aspects of synthesis and audio processing.  In addition, the continuing survey of historical and contemporary practice in the field provides the basis for an exploration of analytical and critical techniques.

  • TECH 203 - Advanced Electroacoustic Music

    TECH 203 explores the musical, technological, and scholarly tools currently available to electroacoustic composers, paying particular attention to the systems proposed by composers such as Wishart, Smalley, Emmerson, and Norman. While we deal extensively with certain hardware and software such as Max/MSP and ProTools, the course is not “about” said tools. Rather, it is organized around musical/scholarly practice and approaches, each of which inevitably draws on a variety of tools. All topics are approached through a combination of reading, listening, and creative work with the ultimate goal of expanding compositional resources and scholarly vocabulary. The first module focuses on stereo composition and diffusion, while the second focuses on multi-channel composition.

  • TECH 204 - Performance Technology Workshop

    TECH 204 concentrates on real-time technologies and performance issues. The course emphasizes direct experience with the volatile and wonderful relationship between emerging technology and performance, particularly in work created for public presentation outside the studio environment.  A variety of performance situations will be addressed, including concert stage, MIDI and OSC controllers, installation, and radio/web broadcast.  Topics include: real-time performance issues, sonic and visual systems, motion sensing, performative gesture, ensemble dynamics, and collaboration.

  • TECH 330 - Studio Recording

    Introduction to the theory and practice of music recording, including a study of recording environments and equipment.  Students will explore basic acoustics, microphone techniques, signal processing, mixing, and editing.  General DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software tools will be demonstrated and compared.  Through practical “hands-on” studio experience, student will develop and demonstrate basic critical listening abilities unique to the field of recording engineering/producing.  Projects will include guided and independent studio recording sessions, class presentations on microphone techniques and industry tools/equipment, and analysis of recordings.

    Mixed Media Collaboration invites students from all disciplines (music, painting, sculpture, writing, movement, video, etc.) to collaborate with other artists. Beginning with relevant precedents as detailed in Vera John-Steiner’s book, “Creative Collaboration,” we will learn a common language to discuss our work. To understand the viewpoints of our collaborators we will investigate the creative processes of the disciplines in which we are less accomplished. This foundation will help us develop collaborative models for responding to aesthetic challenges and technical problems. At the end of the semester, our work will culminate in a transformative performance showcasing the StudiOC learning community.  Field trips required.

    This course explores the representation of the disabled body in American horror film. The course will begin with introducing Disability Theory, considering the social and cultural significance of disfigurement and freakishness, then look at how this informs expectations of disability on screen.   • THEA 260 - Lighting Design

    This class studies the theories and techniques of lighting design for the performing arts. Lectures cover the design process, which includes space, script, music and movement, script analysis, design collaboration, and design execution. Lectures on composition, color, and drafting are supplemented with lighting design projects undertaken by members of the class. Final project is a realized design in the Little Theater or other appropriate Oberlin College venue. Students are required to serve as lighting design assistants to mainstage lighting designers throughout the semester.

  • THEA 264 - African American Drama

    This class surveys plays written by Black Americans from the post-slavery period through the late 20th century. An overview of the history of African-American performance is followed by reading and discussion of current criticism and a wide selection of plays by writers such as James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Adrienne Kennedy, Langston Hughes, Ntozake Shange, August Wilson, and George Wolfe.   • THEA 266 - Freak Show Performance

    This class will explore the history and legacy of freak show performance. We will read historical and theoretical writings about freak shows and freakishness and apply these ideas to analyze modern re-creations of the freak show on Broadway, in reality television, at museums, and elsewhere. We will look at plays and films depicting notable performers such as Sarah Baartman (the Hottentot Venus), Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man), Chang and Eng Bunker (the Siamese Twins), and Daisy and Violet Hilton.

    The Black Arts Workshop combines theory and performance in African American cultural styles.     This is an advanced acting class that uses canonized playwrights such as Shakespeare, Sophocles, and Chekov to allow students to explore the history, process, and implications of re-casting roles in regards to race and gender. In class we will read, rehearse, and perform scenes. Special attention will be paid to identifying actions while embracing heightened language, as well as discussing the implications of incorporating race and gender into the construction of character within the world of any given text.     Dramaturgy is the study of dramatic composition and the representation of the main elements of drama, shaping a story into a form suitable to be performed on the stage. This seminar based course will focus on dramatic structure, dramatic theory, and historical and cultural research. We will move methodically through several texts, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Waiting for Godot, A Doll House, Sizwe Banzi is Dead, Manifest Destinitis, and The America Play.     This course will develop the student’s vocabulary in Michael Chekhov Technique with the goal of broadening and deepening the specific artistic choices of the acting student to create authentic and truthful characters.
