POLT 373 - The U.S. Supreme Court FC SSCI QFR WADV 4 credits This is an advanced seminar on the U.S. Supreme Court. The central focus of this seminar is systematic exploration of the Supreme Court by engaging the leading academic literature in the field. How do Supreme Court justices make decisions? Are decisions based on legal and jurisprudential considerations or are they motivated by the ideological proclivities of justices? Seminar participants will engage in informed discussion and produce a major research paper with theoretical and empirical components. Prerequisites & Notes: One course in American politics

POLT 374 - Elections and Voting in the United States FC SSCI 4 credits In this seminar, students will explore how politicians and the public approach elections and voting in the United States. The goal of this course is to engage critically with foundational and current literature on the explanations of how Americans make voting decisions and the behavior of politicians in their desire to win, and keep, office. Students will develop research ideas focused on course topics and will write a full research paper for class.

POLT 403F - Senior Honors - Full FC SSCI 4 credits This is a required course for senior honors students. It will meet periodically throughout the academic year. Honors students will workshop research proposals and drafts of thesis chapters. Class sessions will help students devise an appropriate research question, methodology, and literature review for their honors theses, as well as prepare for the oral defense.

POLT 411 - Practicum in Applied Research FC SSCI 4 credits Functioning as part of a small consultancy team (the Oberlin Research Group –ORG), students will research and write on a topic that services the needs of an off-campus organization or government official (often in the US State Department). Students will learn about the management challenges, ethical issues, and choices of political research consultants conducting international and national research. Open to sophomore, junior and senior students. Prerequisites & Notes: Consent of instructor needed.

Students who wish to pursue a topic not covered in the regular curriculum may register for a private reading. This one-to-one tutorial is normally at the advanced level in a specific field and is arranged with a member of the faculty who has agreed to supervise the student. Unlike other courses, a student cannot register for a private reading via PRESTO. To register for a private reading, obtain a card from the Registrar’s Office, complete the required information, obtain the faculty member’s approval for the reading, and return the card to the Registrar’s Office.
