EAST 132 - Modern Japan, Nineteenth Century to Present
3 SS, CD Second Semester. This course will begin with the
dynamic changes occurring at all levels of Japanese society in the
nineteenth century. We will then discuss the creation of Japan as
a modern nation-state, its development as an empire-building power, and
how these affected people’s lives (issues of gender, ethnicity,
nationhood and culture). Other themes include how Japan coped
with military defeat, how it regained its regional and global
influence, and contemporary attempts to deal with its past.
