4 HU, WR First Semester. We will study the lyric tradition in English from the later Middle Ages to the Restoration: from popular songs to elaborate formal sonnets, from irreverent seduction poems to holy hymns and meditations. We will explore how the intimate world of the lyric is shaped by public events (e.g. Reformation, Civil War) and cultural histories of gender, sexuality, education, belief, and aesthetics. Authors may include Wyatt, Sidney, Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Herrick, Herbert, Marvell, Milton, and Anonymous. British, Pre-1700.
