3SS This course explores the history of European existentialism. We shall examine the major themes of existentialism (authenticity vs. inauthenticity, meaninglessness, absurdity, freedom and anguish, etc.) through reading philosophers such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre and de Beauvoir. We will be looking both at the development of existentialism as a philosophical trend and at the ways that existentialist philosophers anticipate, inspire and respond to political events.
