HIST 282 - The Invention of Asia

3 SS, CD
First Semester. Examines the contact Europeans and Americans have had with Asian societies and peoples from antiquity to modern times and how they ‘invented’ a variety of Asias. Key questions include: How do these conceptions of Asia reflect on Westerners’ changing attitudes toward their own societies and on historical and intellectual developments in the modern West? How have they mediated Western contact with Asians and Asian societies?  Counts toward the East Asian Studies Major.
