HIST 307 - Sea or Society: the Pre-modern Mediterranean World 3-4 SS, CD, WR New Course Added 11/13/2006
Second Semester. This advanced seminar examines Mediterranean cultures and societies and the changing space and meaning of the sea itself in the Late Roman, Medieval and Early Modern periods, using a variety of currently hotly debated theoretical approaches. Topics will include the social constructions of bodies of water, defining the essence of Mediterranean cultures and identities, orientalism and occidentalism, exploration and colonization of sea space and coastal zones, changes in the Mediterranean economies, and case-studies of Mediterranean societal development and interaction.
Prerequisites & Notes Consent of Instructor Required.
