HIST 113 - The French Revolution and the Origins of Modern Europe

First Semester. The French Revolution will be studied as a means of understanding the political, social, and cultural origins of Modern Europe. Topics will include revolutionary ideology, charismatic revolutionary leadership, and mass mobilization through appeals to national identity and gender. Particular attention will be paid to writing about primary sources, as informed by secondary readings, and to individual research projects. Students should expect to do frequent short presentations, and to write and (rewrite) a number of short papers.
