HIST 103 - American History to 1877: Major Problems of Interpretation 3 SS, CD
First Semester. Central issues in the development of American society, culture, and politics from the eve of European colonization through the close of Reconstruction. Emphasis on modes of historical analysis and important scholarly controversies. Topics include: 17th-century cultural encounters; origins of American slavery and racism; dynamics of nation-building; the growth of capitalism and democracy in the early republic; race, class, and gender in the antebellum North and South; causes and consequences of the Civil War. Lecture/discussion format.
