POLT 232 - European Political Theory: Hobbes to Marx
3 SS Second Semester. Examines main developments in European political theory from the emergence of the early nation-state until the era of industrial capitalist society. Through a close study of selected texts, the decline of absolutist theories of the state, the development of liberalism as the central political theory tradition, and of conservatism and socialism as critical responses to it, are studied. Authors include: Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Burke, Bentham, J.S. Mill, and Marx.
