RELG 387 - Seminar: Religion and U.S. Social Welfare Policy and Social Work Practice: A Historical Perspective

First Semester. This course will focus on the religious origin of social welfare institutions within the USA, including Protestant, Catholic and Jewish traditions (Jewish sects, African American congregations, and conservative Protestant movements, to name a few), which provided material, financial, and spiritual supports. Given the constitutional clause of the separation between church and state, religious institutions established voluntary institutions that provided social supports. This course will also have a service-learning component.
