Second Semester. A seminar exploring patterns of the religious diversity of insular and peninsular Southeast Asia. A principle theme is the transformation of religious traditions (including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and other religious systems) through dynamics of contact, colonialism and change. Readings include historical accounts, primary sources in translation, and studies of contemporary societies. Special emphasis will be placed on ritual practices, religious narratives, cosmological systems, and political structures, including those of modern nation-states.
