RELG 225 - Modern Religious Thought in the West: Late 17th to mid-19th Century
3 HU First Semester. An analysis of Western philosophy of religion and theology as developed in Europe and North America from the end of the Thirty Years War to the early 19th century. Of special interest will be how the emerging scientific worldview affected traditional religious beliefs including views of God, human nature, the authority of scripture, the legitimacy of religious institutions, and the true “essence”of religion. Some of the thinkers to be studied include Pascal, Locke, Hume, Voltaire, Rousseau, Kant, Mendelssohn, Schleiermacher and Feuerbach.
