4 HU, CD, WR First Semester. Scholars have suggested that the eighteenth century marked a crucial shift in our understandings of both “sexuality” and “literature” – yet the relationship between these spheres remains an open question. With the literature of the long eighteenth century as our particular focus, we will investigate the mutually shaping relationship between the sexual and the literary. Authors and theorists to be considered include Plato, Shakespeare, Milton, Richardson, Wordsworth, Freud, Foucault, and Sedgwick. British, Diversity, 1700-1900.
