Second Semester. The course explores the different modes of the post-Nietzschean quest for personal identity and authentic life as represented in the genre of the nouvelle. This narrative form, placed between the short story and the novel, offers a rewarding vantage point to understand a general human problem in the specific context of 20th C. Spain and Latin America. Readings include works by Bombal, Cela, Cortázar, Fuentes, García Márquez, Martín Gaite, Novás Calvo, Onetti, F. Hernández, Poniatowska, Skármeta, Unamuno, Vargas Llosa, Vila-Matas. All reading and discussion in Spanish.
