First Semester. This course examines the interrelations of state and nation in Central Asia, focusing on how national identity is created or eroded, the role of states in these processes, and the resulting paths of political development. Key topics: Soviet ethno-federalism; ‘native’ elites and the Soviet state; nationalist mobilization; ethnic minorities and the politics of nation-building; stagnant political regimes; Islam and counter-insurgency; women and the ‘nation’; and oil-based state development.
