POLT 310 - Seminar: Failed States

3SS  New Course added 05/12/2006

Second Semester. This seminar investigates the disintegration of state authority, comparing a range of cases of state failure in the developing world. We will examine the processes that produced the modern state in Western Europe, and then compare those processes to state breakdown, exploring the various sources of state failure, its consequences (civil war, warlordism, unrecognized state-making), and the possibilities of restoring state authority. Examples will be drawn from sub-Saharan Africa and post-Soviet Eurasia.
