Second Semester. A chronological overview of Japanese art and architecture, examining a range of artistic media in the contexts of the built environment. Topics will include Shinto religion and shrines, cultural exchange with China, Buddhism and Buddhist temples, Zen Buddhism and gardens, tea ceremony and Sukiya dwellings, warlords and castles, urban life and Edo metropolis. We will also investigate art’s relation to gender, patronage, and commerce. Identical to EAST 148
