Second Semester. This course examines Chinese art and architecture in 20
th-century China, which has witnessed the end of monarchy, the founding of the Republic, the rise of the People’s Republic, and the impact of the West throughout the period. Critical issues include the encounters of the East and the West, the tensions of tradition and revolution, the interpretations of modernism and avant-garde, and the problems of globalization and national identity. Counts toward the East Asian Studies major.
