EAST 243 - The Short Story in East Asia and Beyond 3 HU, CD, WR New Course Added 07/26/2006
First Semester. The short story was the dominant form of literary expression in 20th-century East Asia. We will examine the impact of war, modernization, and colonialism on the development of the short story in China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the East Asian diaspora. Readings (all in English) have been selected for both their literary merit and their engagement with the construction of gender, race, and nationality in the public discourses of East Asia and beyond.
