Spring Semester. Zen Buddhism is one of the most popular and one of the most thoroughly misunderstood of all Eastern religions. We will read primary texts of Zen as well as critical histories to understand its unfolding as it spread from China to Japan. Having situated Zen is its native context as just one of many schools of Buddhism, the course concludes with a look at orthodox Zen Buddhist practice in the West. Counts towards the East Asian Studies major.
