RELG 238 - Text and Tradition in Asian Religions 3 HU, CD New Course Added 10/24/2006
The sacred text is central in Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam. But how each of these traditions understands what constitutes a text and how authority derives from the text varies dramatically. Is a text necessarily written? Can it only be in the approved language? Can the tradition add to the sacred canon? Following this theme, we will read sacred texts and discuss how these traditions used them to build communities and doctrines. Counts toward the East Asian Studies Major.
