ARTS 369 - Landscape and Culture in Early Modern East Asia

Using original works in the Allen Memorial Art Museum and a prominent private collection, this course investigates the significance of landscape art as a major cultural phenomenon in early modern East Asia. Primary themes include the relationship between landscape and power, cultural memory, literature, and literati culture. Discussions and writing assignments will also examine the functions of landscape art and the complex process of cultural dissemination and adaptation in China and Japan.
