This course examines and compares various traditions in documentary cinema by considering how each has framed its pursuit of the “real.” Using documentary films from diverse times and places, the class introduces students to basic questions and issues – structure, mimesis, politics, authorship, ethics, history – central to the notion and enterprise of documentary cinema.
