When, why, and how did Modernism become Postmodernism? This course examines current theories of these two amorphous “isms” and surveys the forking paths between them. We will read works and hybrids of literature and theory and consider such topics as: (de)constructions of gender; death of the author; (inter)textuality and the play of the signifier; surrealism and the hyperreal. Authors may include Barnes, Barthes, Foucault, Vattimo, Lyotard, Nancy, Derrida, Borges, Baudrillard. Enrollment limit: 25. Instructor: J.
