FREN 450 - Sujets Contemporains: La Guerre Moderne de trente Ans (1915-1945) Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours Attribute: 3 HU, CD
We will analyze a selection of literary, journalistic, and cinematic texts that treat modern, industrial warfare and total war as narrative, aesthetic, and/or philosophical problems. Our investigations will range from the journaux des tranchées of the Great War to the presse clandestine of the Resistance, from Apollinaire’s Calligrammes to Aragon’s Crève-coeur, and from Colette’s world without men in La Fin de Chéri to Marguerite Duras’ confessions of a tortionnaire in La Douleur. Enrollment Limit: 12. Instructor: E. Murphy Prerequisites & Notes Prerequisites: Two 300-level courses beyond 301.
