FREN 361 - Colloquium: Maisons hantées: littérature et architecture en France aux XIXe-XXe siècles Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 Hours Attribute: 3 HU, CD
In this course we will define the cultural, mythical, and symbolic constructions of the notion of home and their importance in formulating the experience of modernity. Various representations of the home from 19th and 20th-century France will be examined through a variety of themes of cultural significance such as ruins, urban space, memory, nostalgia, technology, madness, and homelessness. Readings of different genres are drawn from works of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, Apollinaire. Enrollment Limit: 15. Instructor: M. Marin Prerequisites & Notes Prerequisites: This colloquium is designed for freshmen and sophomores with strong preparation in French (SAT II score above 675, AP credit in French, FREN 301, or the equivalent)
