FREN 360 - Colloquium: Le Travestissement

Semester Offered: First Semester
Credits (Range): 3 Hours
Attribute: 3 HU, CD, COLQ

Travestissement plays a central role in many literary works. What are its purpose and function? Does it try to conceal or to reveal? Is it about dissembling the true self or reassembling a newer more authentic one? This course will examine some seventeenth and eighteenth century literary texts by Benserade, Marivaux, de Sade, Choisy, or Montesquieu that make such a literary device a central part of their plot, and their relevance to this issue. Enrollment Limit: 15.
Instructor: L. Thommeret

This colloquium is designed for freshman and sophomores with strong preparation in French (SAT-II score above 675, AP credit in French, FREN 301, or the equivalent).
