GEOL 115 - Coral Reefs: Biology, Geology and Politics

Semester Offered: Second Semester
Credits (Range): 3 hours
Attribute: 3 NS

Coral reefs are dynamic systems that boast the greatest diversity on Earth. Paradoxically, they are among the most efficient but fragile marine systems. This course considers the development of modern and fossil reefs over length scales from millimeters to miles and time frames of minutes to millennia.  It examines recent reef decline against the backdrop of long term natural processes in order to understand human stresses on reefs and ways we might mitigate those stresses.
